The people involved in a call

Four roles sit between a telephone call and a working garage door. Here is what each one does and where the handover happens.

Who picks up at two in the morning?

An automated assistant takes the first contact at any hour. It records the calling number, the property location, and your description of the fault, then a person reviews it and calls back. The automated stage exists for a practical reason: the technician qualified to answer a question about spring gauges is frequently underneath a door in Leawood at the time, and a system that only answers during business hours is of limited use to somebody whose garage has been standing open since midnight.

Who decides what the fault is before anyone sets off?

The person returning your call, working from what you describe. A single loud report followed by a motor that strains points to a torsion spring. A motor running freely with no door movement points to a drive gear, a disengaged trolley or a spring that failed silently. A door climbing back up as it closes points to photo eyes or a travel limit. That triage determines which parts are loaded, which is why the questions are specific rather than conversational.

Who arrives at the property?

An independent contractor assigned to the job, operating their own business, vehicle and insurance. They are not employed by KC Garage Door Tech. Before any address is passed to a contractor, their general liability and workers' compensation certificate is checked, along with their business registration with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County or their contractor licensing through Johnson County, depending on where they work. You are entitled to ask to see both at the door, and the recommendation on this site is that you do.

Who sets the price?

The attending technician, on your driveway, after inspecting the whole door rather than the single symptom you reported. Parts are named with their specification, labour is stated separately, and the total is written down. Nothing begins until you agree to it, and if a dismantled assembly turns out to hide more work, the job stops and a revised figure is issued rather than a changed invoice appearing later.

Who handles it if something goes wrong?

KC Garage Door Tech. The contractor was selected here, so a complaint about their work is received here and pursued with them on your behalf, under the timeframes at complaints policy.

Why are no individuals named on this page?

Because the contractor assigned to a job in Leavenworth on a Tuesday may not be the one assigned to Prairie Village on a Thursday, and publishing a roster of photographs would imply a fixed crew that does not exist. What is published instead is the structure, which is at referral marketing disclosure, and the verification applied before anyone is sent to your address.

Any of the above can be asked about directly on (913) 347-4187, including which contractor is assigned to your job and what was verified before they were sent.

Loud bang in the garage and the door won't lift?

That is a broken spring, and it is the most common call we take on the Kansas side. Tell us what you heard and where you are. The price is agreed in the driveway, before anyone picks up a winding bar.
